Miracle (538) is the first completely wild chick in Big Sur in over a century, making her appearance a truly momentous event in the history of the condor recovery program. Her parents, male condor, Shadow (209), and female condor, Tiny (236), laid, hatched, reared, and fledged her without management intervention. Because of this, Miracle (538) represents a positive step towards a more "hands off" approach.
After several years of exploring the whole coast, Miracle (538) paired with another wild-reared condor, Nomad (574). They made history by being the first wild-born California Condors to nest and have a chick in the state since 1985. But that’s not all: They were able to successfully raise a male chick, Vincent (892), the first, second-generation wild-born condor in decades!
Since then, Miracle (538) and Nomad (574) have nested together several times and were most recently successful in 2021, producing female chick, Condor (1104). This year, we suspect Miracle (538) may be wooed by more dominant male Puff Daddy (219), and may decide to nest with him instead. While our hearts go out to Nomad (574), Puff Daddy (219) is a very experienced condor father and is an excellent choice of mate, so we can’t blame Miracle (538) for being tempted by his charms. The situation is slightly awkward, however, since Puff Daddy (219) also happens to be Nomad (574)'s daddy… Good thing condors don’t understand genetics!
