Hatched by two of Big Sur’s most dramatic condors, Penny (1229) sure has a lot to live up to. Her father, Puff Daddy (219), is one of the most dominant males in the Big Sur flock. This year, Puff Daddy (219) upheld his reputation as lady’s man, and wooed female Miracle (538) away from her longtime mate Nomad (574). To make matters worse, Nomad (574) is Puff Daddy (219)’s own son! The scandal!
So far, Penny (1229) seems oblivious to her parents’ shocking love affair, preferring to explore the cliffs where she was hatched. Although she's a bit petite for her age, she compensates with a big personality. When she’s not resting in the shade, Penny (1229) often gets bouts of the “zoomies,” hopping and flapping excitedly around her nest site. Now that her wings are fully developed, she’s incorporated short flights into her repertoire, showing off her moves on a bigger stage -- the very top of her nest cliff! Pretty soon, she’ll build up the stamina to make longer flights, and eventually find her own place in the central CA flock hierarchy. Will Penny (1229) follow in her parents' footsteps and leave drama in her wake? Stay tuned to find out!
In one of the photos below, Penny (1229) is being given her new tags and a health check-up by the Pinnacles National Park Condor Crew. They rappelled into her nest cave to attach her essential tags and tracking devices and to make sure everything was alright with her health-wise before she fledged.
