SMORE in Big Sur
In collaboration with Andrew Molera State Park
A Space for Meaningful Outdoor Recreation and Education (SMORE), located at Andrew Molera State Park in Big Sur - creating equitable access for members of our community to enjoy and learn about the outdoors.
Picture

The project team consists of Zander Design and Denise Duffy & Associates plus others and managed by executive director, Kelly Sorenson, in close coordination with State Parks. A special thanks to Jessica Neafsey of Jessica Mary Land Arts for creating the original SMORE concept plans and renderings!  Would you like to submit a comment?

"Ventana Wildlife Society is leading this effort because we recognize the lack of low-cost, overnight accommodations that exists on the central coast and we have the drive and expertise to the bridge gap between low-income families from local communities to the magnificence of Andrew Molera State Park in Big Sur by providing van transportation, bi-lingual outdoor education and over 30 years of hands-on experience."  Kelly Sorenson, Executive Director.

Help us develop the SMORE vision into a reality, and donate today . . .
What if you grew up and never experienced the coast or other places of beauty in the outdoors?
Unfortunately this is the reality for many of our families who often face transportation, economic, or accessibility barriers. With your help, we will construct a Space for Meaningful Outdoor Recreation and Education (SMORE) at  Andrew Molera State Park in Big Sur, primarily for youth and family programs.
December 2024
The Coastal Development Permit was submitted to the County of Monterey on December 16, 2024!
(PLN240050)
December 2022
A
California State Coastal Conservancy Grant for $300,000 was awarded in support of the SMORE!  See staff recommendation and letters of support. This grant will pay for landscape architectural drawings and engineering, environmental review and permitting, as well as a detailed construction plan.
May 2022
The ERM Foundation awards $10,000
to go toward the development and use of the SMORE!
April 2022
We raised over $29,000 in cash and pledges
through a dinner fundraiser at Tarpy's, presented by Coastal Roots Hospitality, which will be leveraged to receive additional gifts.
