Affectionately nicknamed "Leonard" by biologists, Condor (937) is a big, blundering boy. Leonard (937) is the first chick to be raised by power couple, Loner (311) and McWay (567). In the past, Loner (311) had raised a chick with a former mate, but this was McWay (567)'s first time being a dad. We were thrilled to see this pair's first nesting attempt together succeed! Leonard (937)'s parents chose to nest in a popular redwood tree that had previously been occupied by a different condor pair. Loner (311) and McWay (567) then proceeded to ferociously defended their territory which happened to be very close to several other popular roost trees and flight paths.

At first, we mainly saw Leonard (937) with his parents, but as time went on, he began to spend more time exploring the coast with his juvenile condor friends. Although both of Leonard’s parents have since passed away, he has a strong social circle, and has continued to do well in the wild. While he generally spends most of his time on the coast, Leonard (937) likes to take trips inland to Pinnacles National Park with some regularity. He doesn’t seem particularly motivated to advance his status in the flock's social hierarchy but is instead content and comfortable in his own feathers.

Sadly, Leonard (937) went missing in December of 2023 and was officially declared deceased in December of 2024.
