The ideal candidate is familiar with the historically marginalized communities of Monterey County through lived experience; is bilingual English/Spanish; has a variety of experience working with participants, especially youth; is passionate about providing meaningful outdoor experiences; and is available 16 hours/week minimum. We are hiring instructors to support the following program:
Teen & Teacher Watershed Program - weekly classes during the school year serving alternative education teachers and their students. Instructors work with the classroom teacher to incorporate weekly outings with in-class curriculum, focusing on NOAA B-WET’s Meaningful Watershed Environmental Education (MWEE) framework. Programming typically occurs Mon. - Fri. during the school day and year. Expect 16-30 hour/week.

Job Duties include, but not limited to:
- Lead and co-lead a flexible schedule of educational activities and lessons for participants in outdoor settings
- Strive to make sure participants are enjoying their time and gaining meaningful outdoor experiences
- Ensure participant safety, well-being and comfort
- Communicate and coordinate with parents, vendors, teachers and partners
- Participate in conflict resolution and discipline through positive behavioral management
- Clean, organize and transport supplies, facilitate program set up and breakdown, and transportation logistics
- Be familiar with VWS Emergency Action Plan. Willing and able to administer Adult/Child/Infant First Aid & CPR
- Submit program reports and attendance regularly, as well as incident reports and payroll in a timely fashion
- Assist with data entry and evaluation of program
Qualifications:
- Passionate about sharing nature with others
- Maintain a satisfactory background check (State and Federal)
- Four or more years driving experience, valid CA driver’s license and clean DMV record
- Commercial license may be required for some positions. Assistance provided
- Certified in Adult/Child/Infant First Aid & CPR. Assistance provided
- Available for the assignment duration and all program hours
- Reliable transportation to/from our office and program locations
- Experience working with participants in an educational outdoor setting
- Interact effectively with diverse cultural, ethnic and age groups
- Have an understanding of local natural history and ecology, and be familiar with current environmental topics
- Able to work well as part of a cohesive teaching team including coworkers, participants, parents, vendors, etc.
- Able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (including tasks such as hiking up to 3 miles on non-ADA trails, kayaking up to 3 hours, spending up to 4 hours on an ocean vessel, and lifting up to 50lbs safely)
- Bilingual English and Spanish
- Previous work in cultural relevancy, equity in outdoor education, climate literacy
Programs are mostly decentralized and take place outdoors, year-round, at various locations and in all weather. Participant transportation is a substantial and integral part of our programming.
Compensation: $18/hour ($19 bilingual Spanish/English). Increase of $2/hour with commercial license in hand.

California Condor Internship
Internship starts: August 29, 2022
Ventana Wildlife Society (VWS) is seeking enthusiastic, dedicated individuals to be a part of our California Condor Reintroduction Program in San Simeon, CA. VWS has been reintroducing endangered California condors to the central coast region since 1997 and currently monitors a flock of 90+ condors. VWS currently operates two release sites in the remote coastal mountains of Big Sur and San Simeon.
Position is primarily based out of San Simeon with some work in Big Sur. The position involves releasing and monitoring captive/free-flying California condors utilizing radio telemetry, participating in supplemental food placements, nest observation, public education, as well as other flock management activities.
Interns will be provided field housing and will receive a stipend of $425 every two weeks. Field vehicles will be provided for all condor project related activities. Interns must possess their own means of transportation for non-work related/personal travel on days off.
Applicants must be comfortable spending extended periods of time in an isolated location with one other individual. Interns work an average of 40 hours/week, with some days exceeding 8 hours depending on program needs. Schedule can consist of 4 days on and 3 days off or 5 days on and 2 days off depending on the work required for each week. The full internship runs from August 2022 through February 2023 (6 months). Start and end dates are somewhat negotiable. This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable field experience with an endangered species while living on the breathtaking California central coast.

- Prior bird/ornithological, interpretive, and/or field biology experience.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record
- Experience with driving 4wd vehicles on dirt roads
- Experience working outdoors in remote locations in inclement weather conditions
- A knowledge of basic field safety and/or a CPR certificate
- Good physical conditioning and the ability to hike in steep rugged terrain in inclement weather conditions.
- Ability to safely lift and move carcasses in excess of 50-75 pounds.
- Ability to handle rotten carcasses (not for the squeamish)
- Outgoing personality with an interest in natural interpretation and sharing with the public
- A strong interest in both avian research and restoration
