Based on the registration number of the plane in which this bird was flown to central California, Condor (990) was given the nickname "Sierra". Upon his arrival at the San Simeon release pen, Sierra (990) was shy around the other members of his cohort who had already established a dominance hierarchy in his absence. Luckily, Sierra (990) had another friend from Boise, Kodiak (974), and depended upon him for support. As time went on, however, Sierra (990) outgrew the need for a buddy system and enjoyed everything the San Simeon release slope had to offer.
These days, Sierra (990) has all the confidence he needs to feed alongside the rest of the central California flock wherever he goes. He is frequently seen at bait sites throughout the central California Condor range and doesn’t seem to show a preference for any area in particular. Just like his plane namesake, Sierra (990) loves cruising the skies and letting the winds take him where they may.
