When we realized that Wilbur (696) and his brother were being released in the same cohort, we had to name them after another famous pair of siblings – Wilbur and Orville Wright, first in flight. This is the first time two brothers have been released in the same cohort in Big Sur. Wilbur (696) is a bit goofier than his brother, Orville (716). For example, when Wilbur (696) would catch a glimpse of himself in the two-way reflective mirror in the flight pen, he couldn't resist flying over to check himself out.
Despite his goofy personality (or perhaps because of it), Wilbur (696) has been doing well in the wild. He seems to have paired up with male Apollo (718), his buddy from their cohort, and tends to fly between Big Sur and Pinnacles National Park, spending less time at San Simeon than in his early days. The two males have established their own breeding territory and are on the search for an unpaired female with whom they can nest. Until then, they seem more than content to enjoy one another’s company while soaring in the skies above Big Sur.
