Matea joined the VWS team in the summer of 2023 as a Natural Science Discovery Camp counselor and continued on as an alternative education instructor for the Teen Watershed Program, before taking over as coordinator for the program in the winter of 2023. She is passionate about environmental conservation, outdoor education, fitness, and well-being. After completing her degree in Biology with a focus in Ecology and Evolution at UC Santa Cruz, she moved to Monterey in pursuit of furthering her exploration of the Ventana Wilderness. A native of Seattle, Washington, her interest in science was originally sparked by the greenery of the Pacific Northwest, but was greatly expanded upon after countless hikes and backpacking trips along the central coast of California.
