Pixchi (966) was named after the sacred Pico Blanco Mountain in Big Sur, California, by the local Esselen Tribe. We thought that her “White Peak” name was fitting because, while in the release pen, her favorite spot was the white weighing scale, which is the highest roosting spot in the enclosure. Pixchi (966) is one of the calmer birds of her group, yet fierce enough to stand up for herself when others try to intimidate her.
In November of 2020, Pixchi (966) was released into the wild at the San Simeon release site. She began taking short flights up the coast getting progressively closer to Big Sur. In April 2021, she was seen feeding with the rest of the flock at the condors' Big Sur Sanctuary located not far from Pico Blanco. Since then, Pixchi (966) has expanded her travels and now spends most of her time near Pinnacles National Park. As a young female, Pixchi (966) is an incredibly valuable member of the flock, and we’re eager to see where she’ll choose to settle down as she reaches maturity.
