Sottow (962), whose nickname means “black”, was named by the local Rumsen Tribe. This condor was one of the two females in a cohort with five other males. What she clearly lacked in size was made up for in intelligence! Sottow (962) always managed to find the right time and position to join feeding frenzies and to pick herself some high-quality meat chunks. Other condors would try to steal her food, but witty Sottow (962) always managed to run away and gulp the food down just in time.
“Work smarter, not harder” continued to be Sottow (962)'s motto as she transitioned to life in the wild. Even when feeding in the midst of much more dominant birds, Sottow (962) holds her own and respects her elders without being overly submissive. She is easy-going and approachable and is very social with condors of all ages in the flock. Sottow (962) acts almost like a big sister to younger, juvenile condors, showing them how to feed and fly just like the adults.
