This seemingly shy bird took our observers by surprise when they noticed he was always the first condor to arrive at every feeding event! The name, Xuchen, which means “to get to be first”, was subsequently chosen for this bird by the local Rumsen Tribe. Because Xuchen (956) finishes filling his belly at a carcass well before other condors arrive, he avoids the competition and ensuing commotion that erupts during a typical condor feeding frenzy. Xuchen (956)'s apparent preference to avoid the chaos of crowds has made him a master of stealth and efficiency. Since his release from San Simeon in 2020, Xuchen (956) has continued to hone his feeding skills at the popular Big Sur Sanctuary, sometimes feeding with over 30 other condors! Even with increased competition for food, Xuchen (956) ensures that he gets his fair share.
Pronounced: HOO-chen (with initial “h” sound a little in the throat)
