Whiskey Papa (921) was raised in captivity at Oregon Zoo in Portland. When it was time for him to be transferred down to San Simeon, California for release, he was lucky enough to get a private plane ride instead of a 13 hour road trip! Thanks to Lighthawk, we were able to fly Whiskey Papa (921) all the way from Portland, OR, to Hollister, CA, in just a few hours.
Lighthawk is a charitable organization that donates flights in small aircraft to conservation groups, at no direct cost to their partners. Their amazing network of over 300 pilots generously donate their expertise, time, and aircraft to help further various conservation and environmental projects, including shuttling condors from their captive homes to their release sites!
We named Whiskey Papa (921) after the final letters of his plane’s registration code - it ended in WP, so using the NATO phonetic alphabet, that makes him Whiskey Papa!
Whiskey Papa (921) is a happy-go-lucky condor who is eager to make friends - even with birds who don’t necessarily want to socialize! He cheerfully bosses the other birds around and has a can-do attitude that will serve him well in the wild. Since being released from San Simeon in 2019, Whiskey Papa (921) seems to have chosen Pinnacles National Park as his favorite spot in the central California condor range and is rarely observed outside the park.
