This condor was an welcome surprise to biologists - we didn't realize that Condor (901)'s parents were nesting until he was almost out of the nest! His parents clearly valued their privacy - before the nest was discovered, we were not even sure that they were romantically involved. Fittingly, they chose a very remote coastal canyon to nest in, miles from any road or trail. Only information collected from their new GPS tags clued us in to their sneaky nesting.
Eventually Condor (901) made his way from his remote wilderness birthplace to the release site, where he was trapped and handled for the first time. We discovered a large wound on the top of his head that was not properly healing. He was sent off to Oakland Zoo where the first-rate veterinary staff treated him for a skin infection. We have no idea how he got the wound in the first place, but we affectionately named him “Scabbers” after the Harry Potter character.
