On the coastline of Big Sur, CA, in a beautiful stand of redwood trees, a remarkable story unfolded. California Condor, Jade (1204), took her first daring flight from her redwood tree nest into the world. The date was September 21, 2023, marking the beginning of an inspiring journey.
Jade (1204) was not alone on this thrilling voyage. This condor had two devoted parents, Amigo (204) and Kodama (646), who stood as guardians of her growth and development. (Sadly, Jade recently lost her father, Amigo (204) to lead poisoning in December of 2024.) With vigilant eyes and a nurturing spirit, these majestic condor parents encouraged Jade (1204) to take flight, branch by branch. Despite the parents' unwavering support and patience, Jade (1204) approached this newfound skill with trepidation. The vast expanse of the forest canopy is both inviting and intimidating, but Jade (1204)'s parents remained steadfast and patient, understanding that every flap of their little one's wings brings it closer to mastering the art of flight. Jade (1204) symbolizes not only the survival of her species, but also the hope and dedication of conservationists who have strived to protect the California Condor from the brink of extinction. In the lush wilderness of Big Sur, the story of Jade (1204) is a reminder of the importance of safeguarding our natural world and cherishing the delicate balance of life within it.
