Named after a native flower that grows on California's central coast, Yarrow (1099) is more submissive than the other birds of her cohort and, as a result, she is currently the lowest in the hierarchy. That being said, she does feed with the other birds and, on occasion, hangs out with her sister, Madrone (1100), one of the most dominant birds in the pre-release pen and Yarrow (1099)'s protector at times. Although Yarrow (1099) does socialize once in a while, it is safe to say that she is a bird who appreciates her alone time.
In December, 2024, Yarrow (1099) was taken to Oakland Zoo for a severe case of lead poisoning. She had eaten from a carcass that had been shot with lead ammunition. Vet techs did all they could to save her, including chelation treatment and removing the bullet fragment from her digestive tract. Tragically, Yarrow (1099)'s case was so severe that she was unable to recover. She passed away on January 9, 2025.
