“Eva” is short for evacuate, a name given to her by LA Zoo staff who cared for her when she was evacuated from the field. On September 02, 2020, VWS and Pinnacles biologists rescued Eva (1033) before the Dolan Fire burned over her nest cave. She had a back injury when she arrived to the zoo and was having issues balancing.
In October of 2021, it was determined that Eva (1033) was genetically valuable and that her back injury could affect her ability to survive in the wild. For these two reasons, she remained in captivity in Southern California to support the flock as a whole in a captive breeding program.
