Currently #1003 is flying free- without a tag! #1003 was raised by a devoted trio of parents in a remote redwood nest on the Big Sur coast, and has never been handled. Biologists hope to capture this chick soon to not only to tag it but also to get a blood sample so they can determine the gender and parentage. Our hope is that one day all the wild condors will be tag-less like #1003. We are not quite there yet; the radio and GPS tags are still critically important tools that inform us how long condors are surviving in the wild.
#1003 is named "Katie's Bird" in honor of Katie Lannon, a longtime and beloved VWS employee. Katie was only 34 when she lost her battle with cancer. Learn more about Katie here.
