Preparing for release to the wild on Saturday, October 25th. Huckleberry (1290) is the only male of seven new young condors, all approximately 1.5 years old, that arrived at the San Simeon Release Pen September 15. These magnificent birds were transferred from the LA Zoo and have settled into their new temporary home as some of the wild condors are popping by with curiosity and a warm welcome. The new group includes females: 'Alalā (1265), Nēnē (1289), Mōlī (1300), Bernie (1302), Palila (1307), Koloa (1312), and male, Huckleberry (1290).
Huckleberry was given a playful name that perfectly suits this male of the group. He sits in the middle of the hierarchy and tends to take a laid-back approach, rarely pushing others or working too hard. Like a little brother among his group of females, Huckleberry brings charm and levity to the pen with his easygoing personality.
Fun fact: Huckleberry (1290), Bernie (1302), and Mōlī (1300) were part of a triple brood--they grew up together! We’re thrilled to see them heading into the wild side by side and can’t wait to watch how they interact.
Family Fact: At the LA Zoo, Huckleberry (1290) hatched 4/29/24 and 'Alalā 1265, hatched 4/1/24 are full siblings, exactly one-month apart and Nēnē (1289, hatched 4/25/24 and Koloa (1312), hatched 6/3/24 are full siblings 6-weeks apart. We love to see that double clutching technique!
