Preparing for release to the wild on Saturday, October 25th. Nēnē (1289) is one of seven new young condors, all approximately 1.5 years old, that arrived at the San Simeon Release Pen September 15. These magnificent birds were transferred from the LA Zoo and have settled into their new temporary home as some of the wild condors are popping by with curiosity and a warm welcome. The new group includes females: 'Alalā (1265), Nēnē (1289), Mōlī (1300), Bernie (1302), Palila (1307), Koloa (1312), and male, Huckleberry (1290).
Nēnē (NAY-nay), named after the Hawaiian goose, is a species endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. She earned her name because, like geese, she can be a bit feisty — and she’s the biggest bully of the group. The most dominant of the rookies, Nēnē (1289) often claims the carcass for herself while the others give her space. She has little regard for personal boundaries, frequently spreading her wings near others and displacing them. Often seen in the double-door trap, she seems eager to explore beyond the pen, and our bet is she’ll be the first to leave during the release.
Family Fact: At the LA Zoo, Nēnē (1289), hatched 4/25/24, and Koloa (1312), hatched 6/3/24, are full siblings 6-weeks apart and Huckleberry (1290) hatched 4/29/24, and 'Alalā 1265, hatched 4/1/24, are full siblings, exactly one-month apart. We love to see that double clutching technique!
