Rusty (1181) has been the most independent and adventurous of his 2024 release cohort. Hatched at LA Zoo, Rusty (1181) spent only a few weeks at the San Simeon site after he was released before deciding to explore a little further from home. He has spent time hanging around pastures and farms surrounding the towns of San Simeon and Cambria and has recently taken to travelling along the coast. He has been resourceful and self-sufficient, finding his own food and learning where to roost without the help of the other birds in his cohort. We were all surprised and relieved to see him turn up again on the slope after a month-long absence and are curious about where he will explore next!
Rusty (1181) is named after the rusty-patched bumblebee, a species native to the eastern US and Canada, who is also threatened by extinction.
