• Join Executive Director, Kelly Sorenson, for an extraordinary day in the wilds of Big Sur, at the heart of California condor country - home to the largest land bird in North America, with an awe-inspiring 9.5-foot wingspan.

Kelly has dedicated more than 30 years to Ventana Wildlife Society. He first arrived as a college biology intern, helping reintroduce bald eagles to California’s central coast. Not long after, he helped launch the VWS California Condor Recovery Program. Today, as Executive Director of Ventana Wildlife Society, he remains at the heart of the effort to bring this species back from the brink. Few people carry as much firsthand history of this conservation journey, and even fewer can share it from the very landscape where it continues to unfold.

• Your experience begins at the Ventana Wildlife Society Monterey office before venturing deep into the rugged backcountry of Big Sur. Travel along a private dirt road into the remote Big Sur Condor Sanctuary - 2,800 feet above the Pacific, with the ocean stretching just three miles beyond. It’s a place few ever see, where condors still soar over cliffs and ridgelines shaped by wind, time, and resilience.​

• This protected sanctuary is part of the condors’ natural range, where members of the flock are often seen feeding, soaring overhead, or roosting along the canyon walls. Rather than searching from afar, you’ll spend your day immersed in a place where condors live - offering a rare opportunity to witness these magnificent birds in their natural habitat.

• Over the course of this full-day experience (7–8 hours), you’ll share stories, witness breathtaking scenery, and - if luck is on your side - watch these magnificent birds glide overhead in their native habitat.​
