A significant portion of Monterey County youth are English Language Learners, and many of their parents are mono-lingual Spanish or indigenous dialects. According to the 2008 California Language Census, 19% of students enrolled in our public schools are English Language Learners, and nearly 42% speak a language other than English in their homes. Despite these numbers, there isn’t a lot of environmental education that is offered in Spanish.
VWS is developing bilingual environmental education in Monterey County by bringing together like-minded organizations and individuals to share resources and best practices. |
