Endangered California condors being poisoned

The California condor is the largest land bird in North America. An adult can weigh as much as 31 pounds, stand as tall as 4.5-feet, and have a wingspan up to 10 feet. Thousands of these great birds once called California home, but a now banned pesticide, DDT, destroyed condor eggs and the birds almost disappeared.

Kelly Sorenson, the Executive Director of the Ventana Wildlife Society, said "the population all-time low was 22 birds in 1982." >>> Read full article

Condors and Lead

Thirty percent of all known condor deaths were caused by lead poisoning since the reintroduction program began. Lead from spent ammunition is the principal source and nonlead ammunition is becoming more available due to higher demand. See [recent evidence] of a .22 caliber lead bullet that killed Condor #318 after this bird ingested it while in the wild. >>> Read more

Welcome to Ventana Wildlife Society

In California alone there are 130 species of animals in the wild threatened or endangered with extinction. Ventana Wildlife Society is committed to conserving native wildlife and their habitats. Rather than dwelling on past mistakes that brought many of our wild animals to the brink, we focus on the present. We recover individual species and track the populations of many others so that conservation can be timely as well as effective. Focusing on youth education, we better ensure that future generations have the willingness and capacity to help wildlife. Our vision is to have a society who cares for and supports wildlife across the planet, particularly in California.
